UNEMPLOYED FIRST CLASS GRADUATE ADVERTISES CV ON BILLBOARD

No one can deny that the job market is bleak for many.
Thousands of unemployed people spend their days tirelessly filling out application forms, composing cover letters, and trying to think of a creative answer to ‘what would you say your weaknesses are in the workplace?’
And after unsuccessfully applying for countless positions, Adam Pacitti had had enough – and spent his last £500 on a billboard asking employers to give him a job.
The 24-year-old dreamed up the way of promoting himself, and his talents, three months ago, after sending out his CV for at least 250 different positions.
Adam, who lives with his family on the Isle of Wight, said he wanted to add something extra to his application – and as video CVs are now a popular form of a applying for jobs, decided to go a little bigger.
He said: ‘I thought traditional advertising could work to promote it. It’s a very striking image and I thought news outlets would be able to cover it easily.’
Graduate Adam Pacitti is hopeful someone will give him a job
Now, after creating the website employadam.com, and yesterday posting the billboard and Tweeting the image, the would-be producer has watched his campaign for employment go viral in less than 24 hours.
He said: ‘After posting, I had about ten re-Tweets in an hour.
‘Then my phone exploded, and now I’ve had over 7,000 re-Tweets.
‘I’m incredibly humbled that people have seen I’ve thought outside the box, and then shared this with others.’
After graduating this year with a First Class Honours degree in Media Production from the University of Winchester, the student worked in an arcade, filling the two-pence machines and stacking toys.
He said: ‘I was grateful to have a job, but it’s not something I’d really like to do.
‘I came up with the idea for the video and billboard about three months ago, and managed to save up £500 while working.
‘I called in favours from friends and asked studios, and made the video, and decided to post the billboard in London, because that’s where most of the jobs are.’
ADAM PACITTI, MEDIA GRADUATE
AGE: 24
EDUCATION: 2009-2012 University of Winchester
BA Media Production First Class Honours.
WORK EXPERIENCE: 2011 Jet Videos
Runner whose tasks included answering phones and buying props.
2010-11 Hospital Broadcasting Association
Presented a weekly show with phone-ins.
2007 Solent TV
Runner liaising with actors, police and public.
EMPLOYMENT: 2008-11 Gailygain Ltd.
Maintenance technician installing coin-operated amusement machines.
2007 Sumomedia
Assistant manager in charge of small team.
2004-07 Woolworths
Supervisor.
Adam said he was forced to come up with the unusual approach after spending six hours a day filling out application forms.
He said: ‘It’s like a job in itself, it’s difficult – you have to tailor your CV to each job, you’re often asked to do a video project – and I only had two interviews after sending off my application.
‘It can be disheartening applying for so many job and not getting anywhere.
‘I have a good degree and relevant work experience, but others have more experience than me, so perhaps I don’t look like the most attractive candidate.
‘I thought this would be a way of showing my personality and my experience.’
Adam, who says his strengths are production, advertising, good taste of mainstream television and a strong knowledge of social media and advertising, says his dream job would be a junior producer.
He said: ‘If I could get that job with an independent production company or broadcaster, I’d be over the moon.’
The creative student says after the campaign he has had some emails from companies, but no concrete of a job offer yet – but is hopeful his campaign will persuade someone to give him a chance.

CHELSEA COMPLETE SIGNING OF NEWCASTLE STRIKER DEMBA BA ON THREE-AND-A-HALF-YEAR DEAL

Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Demba Ba for an undisclosed fee.
The Senegal international moves to Stamford Bridge following an 18-month spell with Newcastle United, and has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with the Blues.
He will be eligible for selection for tomorrow’s FA Cup match at Southampton, and the Capital One Cup semi-final against Swansea, but cannot play for us in the Europa League this season having appeared in the competition for Newcastle. He will wear the no. 29 shirt.
‘It feels good to be here, I’m very happy and very proud,’ Ba says.
‘It was important for me, and for Newcastle, to get my future sorted and now we can move on. Now they have the whole month to buy someone and for me as well, the sooner the better. Now I am here I just need to get settled in.
‘When the club who won the Champions League wants you, the decision is very easy. This club is massive and that’s something that helped the decision a lot. It was not a hard one.’
The 27-year-old enjoyed a memorable time on Tyneside, where his ruthlessness in front of goal played a major part in last season’s fifth-place league finish.
Most comfortable playing as a lone striker, Ba’s predatory instincts in and around the penalty area make him a difficult player to handle and he also possesses the ability to score spectacular goals.
Born in Sevres, in the suburbs of Paris, Ba’s career began at Port Autonome du Havre, where he played for two years between 1998 and 2000, before moving to Frileuse.
After a short spell with the French club, Ba, who started out playing in the centre of midfield but moved up front at the age of 18, transferred to Montrouge in 2001.
It was there he began to make a name for himself, and he then headed to England where he was offered trials with Barnsley and Watford.
Having enjoyed a fruitful relationship with former Chelsea player Ray Lewington, who was Watford manager at the time, it looked as though Ba had found a place to settle.
However, when Lewington left soon after, Ba moved back to France where he signed a one-year deal with Rouen in the Third Division.
A return of seven goals in 32 matches earned him a move to Mouscron, in the Belgian top flight, where an impressive albeit short spell paved the way for his transfer to 1899 Hoffenheim in the German Second Division at the beginning of the 2007/08 campaign.
It was to prove a significant time in Ba’s development, and he was a key figure in helping the club gain promotion to the Bundesliga.
Their first season back in the top flight saw Hoffenheim finish in a respectable seventh, aided in no small part by Ba’s 14 goals.
In January 2011, he was back in England, and signed for West Ham United.
After making his bow for the Hammers as a substitute in a game against Birmingham City, Ba endeared himself to the supporters a week later on his full debut, where his two goals helped West Ham fight back from 3-0 down to earn a 3-3 draw away at West Bromwich Albion.
On a personal level, his time at Upton Park went well, with seven goals in 12 appearances, but collectively the team underperformed resulting in their relegation from the Barclays Premier League, prompting Ba’s move to Newcastle United.
He netted two hat-tricks in quick succession, against Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City, at the beginning of the 2011/12 season.
This impressive start to life at St James’s Park was rewarded with the Premier League Player of the Month award in December 2011, and he finished the season as the club’s top scorer with 16 goals to his name.
The current campaign saw Ba continue where he left off, as he broke the deadlock with a fantastic volley against Tottenham Hotspur on the opening day of the season, while shortly after his brace at Goodison Park helped Alan Pardew’s men secure a well-earned 2-2 draw against Everton.
His last performance in a Newcastle shirt came in the weekend’s 7-3 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates where he netted a brace.
Thus far, he has scored 13 Premier League goals this season.
Ba has established himself as a regular in the Senegal international set-up since scoring on his debut back in 2007 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania.
He has scored four times for his country and becomes the first Senegalese player to join Chelsea.

ARSENAL MAKE FORMAL DAVID VILLA APPROACH AS THEY PREPARE SECOND ADRIAN LOPEZ BID

Arsene Wenger is willing to pay up to €17m to secure the permanent signing of Spain’s record goalscorer while the Gunners are also still in talks with Atletico Madrid

The Londoners remain in talks with Atletico to sign Adrian after tabling an opening offer of around £10 million, (€12m) which was revealed by Goal.com earlier this week.
But Arsenal will not push through the deal for Adrian until they are definitively told by Barcelona that Villa is not available for a transfer this month.
But Barcelona are playing hardball and remain reluctant to off-load such a valuable asset ahead of a twin assault on the Champions League and La Liga titles. The Catalan club have rejected the possibility of Villa going out on loan until the end of the season.Goal.com understands that Wenger has learned that Spain’s all-time leading goalscorer is keen to join Arsenal and make what would be a sensational move to Emirates Stadium after growing frustrated with his lack of opportunities at Camp Nou.
Arsenal are prepared to bide their time even though they have made bolstering their strikeforce a top priority in the window.
Wenger wants to sign a mobile, orthodox centre-forward this month who can play anywhere across his forward line and dovetail with his current first-choice spearheads Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud.
Arsenal will only sign one senior frontman this month and Wenger’s sights are now firmly set on either Villa or fellow Spain international Adrian.
It is understood that a fee of €14.8m could be enough to push through the Adrian deal, which is lower than the €18.1m release clause in the forward’s contract.
Goal.com understands that Arsenal opened negotiations with Atletico to sign the 24-year-old before Christmas. As revealed by Goal.com in October, Arsene Wenger has been closely pursuing Adrian, as he is known in his homeland, for months after failing to sign him last summer.
Villa’s potential availability has prompted a slight change of approach but it is uncertain whether Barca will come to the negotiating table.
Meanwhile, Arsenal have been encouraged in their pursuit of Adrian by the knowledge that he has a buy-out clause in his contract.
The Premier League club initially stopped short of triggering it with their first offer, as they try to take advantage of Adrian’s diminished status in Diego Simeone’s title-challenging team.
Despite scoring for the Spanish national team this season, the forward has started just six of Atletico’s 17La Liga matches, scoring two goals.

Nevertheless, Wenger has received excellent feedback from his scouts on Adrian, who has the versatility to play anywhere across the front three and has been hailed in some quarters as the new Villa. He has a proven scoring record at age-group level for his club and Spain, won the Golden Boot at the 2011 European Under-21 Championship – scoringfive goals for the tournament winners – and followed that up with 18 goals for Atletico last season

RELATIVE SAYS MANDELA IS AT HOME AND ALERT, WANTS RUMORS ABOUT DEATH TO STOP

Former South African President Nelson Mandela who has been at home after a long stay in the hospital, is alert and playing with his grandchildren, his granddaughter Zaziwe Manaway told CNN exclusively Friday.
Mandela, 94, is aware of social media rumors that he’s close to death, Manaway said.
That is absolutely not true. My grandfather is well,” she said. “It can be very, very hurtful for us to hear these messages out there in the social media that our grandfather is going to go home to die. It is insensitive.”
Mandela is revered in his country, CNN’s Robyn Curnow writes, because he reminds South Africans of how far they have come. The former president embodies the South Africa that was promised in the election of 1994, and many South Africans worry that their country no longer reflects the democratic ideals Mandela spent his life advocating.
Manaway said she wants to appeal to people spreading rumors to stop, and to be more sensitive to the family and to Mandela, a global icon of peace and South Africa’s defeat of apartheid.
“My grandfather still wakes up in the morning (and) reads the newspaper,” the 35-year-old said. “So he is also aware of what is being said around him.”
Mandela was treated for an acute respiratory infection in 2011. He was hospitalized for a lung infection on December 8, and on December 15, he underwent surgery for removal of gallstones.
Because Mandela is in his 90s, it’s understandable that “once in a while, he needs medical care and medical attention,” another granddaughter, 33-year-old Swati Dlamini, told CNN. “And we’re very grateful he’s surrounded by the best medical team. He’s very well taken care of, and he’s very comfortable, and he’s very happy.”
On Wednesday, a spokesman for South African President Jacob Zuma told media that Mandela had been discharged from the hospital and would continue receiving treatment at his home in Houghton.
He’s received well wishes from around the globe, his granddaughters said.
“We’d just like to thank the whole world for sending us messages and keeping us in their prayers,” Manaway said.
“We know that people worry and we know that people are concerned,” Dlamini said. “But, you know, we’d just like people to know that he’s doing very well and he’s in good spirits and he’s very cheerful.”
Mandela has not made a public appearance since the 2010 World Cup hosted in his country. In 2011, South Africans got a rare glimpse of him when he voted in local municipal elections at his home in Johannesburg.
There’s been secrecy surrounding his health.
“He has every right to his privacy,” Dlamini said. “As the family, we call on people and urge people to give us the privacy to deal with whatever we’re going through as a family in private.”
“I think people need to remember that my grandfather played a huge role — and not only him, many other South Africans played a huge role — to get us where we are now,” she added. “My grandfather said this when he was resigning from public life — it is now (up) to South Africans to take this country forward, that a legacy like his should be carried by as many people as possible.”
Dlamini said she is telling her children about their great-grandfather’s life.
He was the president from 1994 to 1999, making him the first president chosen in a democratic election and the country’s first black president. In his younger years, he fought against apartheid and was sentenced to life in prison for his activism. He spent 27 years behind bars and was released in 1990. Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
“He’s always dedicated his life to the struggle,” Dlamini said. “For our children to be able to spend time with him now … they can sit on his lap and hear stories from him. It’s great; something we didn’t have growing up.”
On Mandela’s birthday in July this year, former U.S. President Bill Clinton reflected on the conversations the two have had. Mandela kept his wife and daughter in mind, Clinton said.
“He didn’t call me a single time, not once, when he didn’t ask about Hillary (Clinton) and Chelsea,” Clinton said of their conversations during the time both were in office. “If it wasn’t too late, he’d ask me to go get Chelsea, bring her to the phone, ask about her homework.”
Clinton said the anti-apartheid icon never lost touch with his humanity.
“I saw in him something that I try not to lose in myself, which is no matter how much responsibility you have,” Clinton said, “he remembered you were a person first.”

DELHI GANG-RAPE SUSPECTS TO BE CHARGED IN COURT

NEW DELHI: Five men accused of gang-raping a 23-year-old student on a moving bus in New Delhi in a deadly crime that repulsed the nation are to be formally charged in court on Thursday.
Police will lay out evidence against them of rape, kidnapping and murder after the woman died at the weekend from the horrific injuries inflicted on her during an ordeal that has galvanised disgust over rising sex crimes in India.
The men, mostly residents of New Delhi slums, will face the death penalty if convicted, India’s Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde has said, amid public clamour for their execution.
“It is compulsory for all the accused to present themselves before the magistrate,” explained Rana Dasgupta, a legal officer at the Saket district court complex where armed police maintained tight security on Thursday morning.
The magistrate, working from a small room with 30 chairs, “will admit the charge sheet presented by the police and then give a copy of the charge sheet to all the accused,” Dasgupta added.
This document — reportedly 1,000 pages long — will detail the evidence collected, the most powerful of which is expected to be a statement from the victim after the attack and an account from her boyfriend who was with her at the time.
He was beaten during his attempts to save the medical student after the couple were lured onto the private bus by the reportedly drunk gang after watching a film at night.
A sixth suspect in the case who is believed to be a minor aged 17 will not be charged in the Saket court on Thursday, a Delhi police spokesman told AFP. Detectives are awaiting the results of a bone test to verify his age.
The trial of the suspects has been fast-tracked and Altamas Kabir, the chief justice of India, has cautioned against letting public anger overwhelm the due process of the law.
Lawyers at the district court in New Delhi have decided they will not defend the suspects, meaning that the government will have to appoint advocates for them.
“Let us not get carried away. A swift trial should not be at the cost of a fair trial,” chief justice Kabir was quoted as saying in the local media on Thursday.
Protesters have massed in Indian cities daily since the December 16 assault demanding the government do more to combat crime against women, with tougher penalties for offenders and even chemical castration being considered.
The latest incident, though far from rare in a country where gang rapes are commonplace, has led to deep soul-searching in the media and the country’s political class about the treatment of Indian women.
Analysis has focused on the deeply patriarchal Indian society, in which misogyny and sexism run deep and women are often second-class citizens, as well as the difficulty of rape victims in dealing with social stigma and the police.
On December 28, it emerged that a 17-year-old girl had committed suicide after police allegedly tried to persuade her to drop a complaint of gang-rape and instead either accept a cash settlement or even marry one of her attackers.
The government has set up three separate commissions to look into the incident and suggest changes in the law, with one minister suggesting new anti-rape legislation should be named after the victim.
This sparked a controversy as her name has not been disclosed in line with legal protections given to the victims of sex crime and their families, who face social stigma.
The brother of the victim, speaking from the family’s home village in northern Uttar Pradesh state, said they would not object if the government wanted to name a new law after her.
“My father feels if they want to name the new law after her, they can go ahead, it will be like a tribute in her memory,” he told the Indian Express newspaper.
The brother also pleaded that the family should be left alone to grieve their loss.
“The public anger is justified but my sister’s story should not be made into a spectacle,” he said.
A recent poll found India to be the worst in the G20 group of nations for women because of child marriage, abuse and female foeticide, which has led to a badly skewed sex ratio in the country of 1.2 billion people.

HILLARY CLINTON RELEASED FROM THE HOSPITAL

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has been released from a New York hospital after being treatedfor a blood clot, the State Department announced on Wednesday.

“Her medical team advised her that she is making good progress on all fronts, and they are confident she will make a full recovery,” State Department spokesman Philippe Reines said in a statement. A date has not been set for her to return to work.

Clinton was admitted to the hospital on Sunday for treatment of a blood clot related to a concussion she suffered after fainting in December. Her doctors said the clot was located “in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear,” and she was treated with blood thinners.
Clinton is expected to step down as secretary of state this month. President Barack Obama has named Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry to succeed her.

BALOTELLI AND MANCINI INVOLVED IN FURIOUS TRAINING GROUND BRAWL

The Manchester City manager reacted angrily to a late challenge by the striker on Scott Sinclair as the pair had to be separated by club staff at Carrington

Mancini-Balotelli
The Italy international is understood to have angered Mancini with a late challenge on team-mate Scott Sinclair at the club’s Carrington base.
“I love him because for many years we live together. I’ve seen him grow. But the professional relationship is another thing and I’ve told Mario what I need from him.
The 48-year-old confronted the centre-forward and the pair had to be separated by staff before Balotelli left Carrington shortly after.
Balotelli has been involved in altercations at the club’s training ground before, having previously been photographed clashing with Micah Richards.
The striker has been linked with a potential January exit from Manchester City, with AC Milan rumoured to be interested in making a bid.
Until now, Mancini – one of the controversial star’s staunchest defenders – has insisted the 22-year-old would not be sold, but recently indicated Balotelli had to work harder in training.
“I think Mario will stay but the future depends mostly on him,” Mancini told La Gazzetta dello Sport last week. “Sheikh Mansour likes Balotelli because he recognises the talent and he exports the name of the City over the world.
“We need to consider that Mario was made as a major investment, and this is not a club that throws its capital through the window.
“The relationship between me and him is always good, even if one day he does something,” he continued.
“The time of cheap talk is over. Balotelli is 22 years old and now it’s time to be professional. I ask from him seriousness and commitment in training, a more stable private life and correct behaviour on the pitch.”
Balotelli has been out of the first-team picture due to an illness recently, and was set for a return to the side when City face Watford in the FA Cup on Saturday, before Thursday’s incident.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SET TO ACQUIRE 30 NEW PLANES

The federal government says it would soon acquire 30 aircrafts to boost domestic airlines in Nigeria and to also cushion the high cost of air fares in airline business in Nigeria.

The General Manager, Corporate Communications, of the Ministry of Aviation, Yakubu Dati stated this in Benin City shortly after a tour to check the extent of remodelling and reconstruction work at the Airport in Benin City.

Answering questions on the safety of airplanes in Nigeria, Mr Dati said concerns in this area has led to removal of tariffs on aviation spare parts and that plans to purchase airplanes for the operators.
He said the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) was bent on removing abandoned aircrafts across the country as it does not fit into the aviation Master Plan.

Explaining how the fund needed for the new aircraft would be sourced, Mr Dati said the federal government would purchase the airplanes through the aviation fund being managed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Bank of Industry (BoI) as direct disbursement of funds was being abused
“This is to help domestic airlines operate profitably and make it attractive for investors because spare parts are a major cost component in the aviation industry.”

He reiterated government’s commitment to making the country’s aviation industry a hub in the African continent. On abandoned planes across airports in the country, he said: “We have given the ultimatum for the owners of abandoned aircraft to remove them because they constitute menace to our airspace and airports.
“They are dangers to the flying publics because they may be places where these birds could hide. We have also discovered that some of the aircraft have litigation issues around them, some of them were used as collateral for loans.

“Such things are being handled by our legal department and as soon as those issues are resolved, the planes will be moved. We also try to advise owners that there are several creative ways in which they can use them. We are in the age of recycling and they are built with plastics and metals and that can be done profitably.
“But definitely, when the period we give elapses, FAAN will take action to ensure that we clear our spaces of abandoned aircraft because it does not fit into the aviation master-plan.”

NIGERIAN TELECOMS OPERATORS ASSURE SUBSCRIBERS OF IMPROVED SERVICES IN 2013

The Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) on Wednesday assured telecoms subscribers of improved quality of services in 2013.
Mr Gbenga Adebayo, the Chairman of ALTON, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that operators were upgrading their networks to ensure better quality services henceforth.
He said that subscribers deserved value for money in terms of the quality of services being rendered to them. According to him, a lot of works are in progress towards providing better services and reduce call drop rate as well as improved interconnectivity among operators.
Adebayo said that operators were extremely passionate about building robust and resilient networks that would empower more Nigerians to fulfill their needs.
He said that operators had invested heavily in building additional base stations in the underserved and un-served areas.
The ALTON chairman appealed to the Federal Government to provide security for all telecoms facilities across the country.
“The bombing of telecoms outfits and the devastating floods affected a number of our base transceiver stations across the country in 2012 which had significant impact on the quality of services.
“We are hoping that in 2013, government will assist us to secure critical telecoms infrastructure that can affect the quality of service,” Adebayo said.
He said that operators had done a lot of work to overcome the infrastructural and environmental challenges impeding the delivery of quality services.
“Telecoms operators are still upgrading their facilities to meet the growing number of subscribers that are increasing exponentially every day.
“We will improve on our network capacity so as to nip in the bud the issues of call drop, poor quality of voice signal, poor reception and poor inter-connectivity with other networks,” he said.
Adebayo said that telecoms equipment should be seen as public infrastructure that should be given adequate protection by the government.
“Those facilities are seen to be owned by service providers, but we are saying that going forward, they should be seen as facilities in care of the public and supervised by the government,” Adebayo said.
He called for government intervention in the area of providing stable power supply, securing the environment, elimination of multiple taxes and regulation of the sector.
