BRITISH COUNCIL NIGERIA RECRUITS ELT PROJECT MANAGER: Abuja





Job Title: ELT Project Manager
Duration of job: 12 month fixed term
Reports to: ELT Adviser

Location: Abuja

Job Purpose

To contribute to the regional strategy for English in Sub-Saharan Africa.
To manage a portfolio of large scale and local ELT projects, mainly through partnerships to meet the British Council’s objectives and targets.

The post will involve managing ongoing and new projects in Nigeria under the supervision of the English Language Teaching Adviser. The post will involve projects for learners of English, teachers of English and policymakers.

Accountabilities, Responsibilities and Main Duties
(including people management and finance)


  • The postholder will be responsible for managing a number of projects within the British Council’s global English portfolio. Specific duties will include:
  • financial accounting and planning for each project, using the following tools:
  • SAP financial reports to verify charges and identify/correct mis-charges/omissions promptly, as part of risk control procedure
  • SAP financial planning/forecasting functions to ensure that up-to-date forecasts of project expenditure are maintained and that budgets are properly and accurately managed
  • monthly cash flow estimates which accurately reflect project expenditure requirements
  • raising or approving purchase orders for operational expenditure items
  • project planning, monitoring and evaluation, using the following tools:
  • project logic models
  • Gantt charts to reflect planned activity
  • scorecard instruments (audience forecasts and actuals, quality of service questionnaires)
  • managing relationships with project partners, and representing the project to other external stakeholders
  • ensuring projects are marketed to the highest standard in print , digitally and at event.
  • soliciting partnership funding against specified income targets
  • ensuring that all project activity reflects key equal opportunities and diversity issues
  • The post holder will be accountable to English Language Teaching Adviser for the successful progress and implementation of each project. The role will involve team work with one or more Project Officer(s) and one other Project Manager.
Key relationships: (include internal and external)

1.) External

Ministry of Education , Universal Basic Education Commission; State Universal Education Boards, State Ministers of Education, State and Local Government Area training officers and supervisors , radio and print media houses, other private sector partners

2.) Internal

coordination and cooperation with colleagues in ELT team
liaison with finance colleagues to ensure that all financial tasks and deadlines are fully met
Other Project Management Teams
Country Director Nigeria and Deputy Director Nigeria

Other important features or requirements of the job
(e.g. travel, unsocial/evening hours, restrictions on employment etc)

The post will involve travel throughout Nigeria and may involve sometimes involve work outside office hours including in the evening.

Qualifications

Relevant post –secondary qualification with Experience of managing projects

Skills and Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the Nigerian state education sector
  • Knowledge of ELT
  • Financial planning and management – Level 2
  • Project & contract management – Level 2
